Serum levels of Cytokines in Patients with Various Cancer

Abstract
Elevated levels of serum soluble interleukin 2 receptor(sIL-2R) have been reported recently in patients with various solid cancer. Serum levels of sIL-2R are closely correlated with disease evolution and therapy, an are also of prognostic value
in
some
patients with cancer. The biological role of serum cytokines including sIL-2R howver, is still poorly understood in solid cancer. To define clinical significance of cytokines, we investigated serum levels of sIL-2R, soluble CD8(sCD8), tumor
necrosis
factor ¥á(TNF¥á), and interleukin 6(IL-6) by sandwich enzyme immunoassay in 18 cases of radiotherapeutic patients (7 patients with solid cancer after radical surgery, 11 patients before surgery), and 16 cases of adult healthy subjects as control.
The
patients attended the clinic regularly after radiotherapy. Serum levels of sIL-2R were significantly increased in patients with cancer before radiotherapy as compared with healthy controls(p<0.05). The levels of IL-2R elevated before radiotherapy
in the
patients without surgery were declined in 83.3%(5/6) of the patients with clinical complete and partial response after radiotherapy. Serum levels of sCD8. TNF¥áand IL-6 were found not to be different between patients and healthy controls, and
before and
after radiotherapy in patients with no operation. From there results, it can be suggested that the serum levels of sIL-2R are significantly increased, and the serial measurement of serum sIL-2R provides a prognostic index of the clinical response
to
radiotherapy in the patients with solid cancer.
